Kumu Sylvia Puananihaʻaheo Edgar has been a Kumu Hula since the age of 15 years old.  Kumu Puanani was trained in hula in her early teens by Kahu Haina "Hienie" Kalehualahaʻole Blaisdell.  Kahu Hienie and his hālau, including Puanani, were the first hālau in history, outside of the Hawaiian Islands, to participate in the Merrie Monarch Hula Competition back in April 1977.  As an adult, to further her education in hula, she ʻūniki (graduated April 2008) through Loea Kawaikapuokalani Hewett.  She has had her own award winning hālau, Hula Hālau O Puananihaʻaheo, in Ventura, CA for about 19 years; www.puanani.org.  As a Kumu Hula she emphasizes the preservation of the Hawaiian culture through hula oli, music and lei making.

Kumu Puanani is an active member of Kūlia I Ka Pūnāwai, Kumu Hula Association of Southern California.  She has recorded 4 CDs with Pūnāwai and is a member of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Science).  Kumu Puanani has also recorded her own solo chant albums "Kahiko Hula 101" & "Kahiko Hula 201" (CDBaby.com & iTunes).  Kumu Puanani and her daughter, Nani Edgar, has had the pleasure to work with 6 time Grammy Winner Daniel Ho from 2007 to 2015.  Kumu Puanani choreographed hulas to Daniel's original music and her daughter Nani danced those hulas and sang background vocals for Daniel.  Kumu Puanani also had the great opportunity to work with Academy Award Nominees, Music Composers Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders on the "Soul Surfer" movie soundtrack (2011).  She was one of the Hawaiian vocal artists on the movie score.  Most recently, Kumu Puanani has collaborated with the talents of Aolani Kaeka-Preuss & Mauro Quibin (Lowell Edgar Productions) in song writing on their newly released CD Kauoha Wau; April 2017.    ​
